Abigail Rodriguez, 2012 Seymour Award Finalist
International Baccalaureate English teacher at Fresno High School, Darren Klassen, describes Abigail as a dynamic and creative person of intellect and intention. Mr. Klassen explains that, as an active member of CSF, Abigail is looked at by other students as a leader, and can be relied on as such. He writes that Abigail is truly a joy to work with, with her ability to laugh at herself, her impressive skills, and her creativity and substance.
Abigail has served as a member of Fresno Youth Mural Team since the fall of 2010. Youth Media Director, Mai Der Vang, applauds Abigail's commitment, work ethic, creativity, and leadership. Ms. Vang states that Abigail has been instrumental in the project, being the first to arrive, and starting without direction or reminder. Abigail is committed to helping the community and is a natural leader. According to Ms. Vang, Abigail possesses the passion and commitment to pursue anything she sets her mind to.
The first line of Abigail's personal statement is "to experience the loss or near loss of someone close to your heart can crush you or make you stronger. I chose to grow stronger and make the most of my life". Abigail goes on to describe the moment her father became ill, and she needed to remain strong. Armed with this strength and experience, she was able to connect and sympathize with kids in her volunteer job at the local hospice center. Abigail writes "the meaning of loss has changed the way I approach challenges. I've learned from what this experience has taught me about the fragility of life. I am more empowered and ambitious... and I'm ready to live my life to the fullest." Abigail hopes to attend Santa Clara University in the fall, and pursue a double major in organic chemistry and art history.
